Place your hands one over the other on your lower abdomen and concentrate on breathing. Take slow breaths and hold for about four seconds before releasing slowly. Seated Meditation: This is the most popular form of meditation. What would you do if you spent a year without the support of any beauty products?

The first day that I was makeup-free, I still had the remnants of makeup from the day before. I felt confident in my ability to go at least a month without makeup. My intention was to prove to myself that I didn’t need makeup to feel beautiful or confident about the way I look. As the days progressed and any semblance of makeup was cleaned off my face, I started to panic. I worried about how small my eyes are or about the dark circles beginning to form underneath them from not getting enough sleep. I was anxious that other people would notice how pale my skin is in the winter. And, horror of all horrors, my skin broke out within the first week.
What do you think? Is your beauty routine the result of fitting in or is it about pampering yourself? Would you ever consider doing something like this,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
Now, I’m not going full-throttle like the author Phoebe Baker Hyde did, but I want to include a number of the principles. So far I’ve gone a week without makeup. Why did I pick makeup first? Because I realized that I wasn’t using makeup to enhance my face – I was using cosmetics to hide it. I was using eyeliner,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], mascara, blush, light bronzer, and concealer to make my face the face that I thought I should have, to hide my imperfections.
The book inspired me to take a look at my own beauty routine. The truth is: I was doing it pretty often. This is very similar to how a lot of women function: Never leaving the house without looking entirely put together. I admit that my outfits usually tend to match and that I feel a tad embarrassed if people catch me wearing a mismatched sweater to stay warm or with a visible panty line. That’s why I started to question: Am I doing these things because I enjoy doing them, or am I paying so much attention to my appearance because I want others to like the way that I look? Turns out, I cared a lot more about what other people thought than I originally believed I did.
So, I took on the challenge.
This past week has been a series of emotional ups and downs. Every time I start to feel uneasy or insecure, I remind myself of my intention. I remind myself that I’m awesome, that my personality shines through, that no one cares if I’m wearing makeup (and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if they do, their opinion isn’t as important as my own). I remind myself that I am the only one who has to like how I naturally look, because my opinion is the one that matters most. I also think about all of the beautiful women I know who I never see wearing makeup. I do not see their faces as ugly, hideous, or in need of covering up. Why should I see my own that way?
I swear, there are times when I am about near to tears because I am so afraid to hear people tell me that I’m not pretty or that I should really consider looking into a decent foundation. These are the times when I force a smile and create some time to myself to ask why I’m thinking this. Why is it so important to me to look a certain way? Why do I care what other people think? What does it matter? By asking the right questions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I’m able to find answers, to find peace and clarity in the midst of emotional chaos. So here's my invitation to you...if you have been viewing social anxiety as 'a thing that you suffer from' or some form of 'illness', suspend those old beliefs for a moment and become open to these two new important distinctions...because it’s from this position that you can start to make some serious progress.
Social Anxiety is not a thing it is a collection of limiting beliefs/mis-informed opinions that were created with good intentions but now have left you with some destructive neurological patterns that you keep playing through,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Feeling unnecessarily anxious,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nervous or scared around people is a much more common problem than people like to admit. There are a wide variety of thoughts and theories as to where this phenomenon originates. Genetics, child development, chemical imbalance and nutrition have all been cited at some stage as playing their part in the make-up of what can often, on the surface, appear a complex problem…
Not only does this operate from the belief that you are in some way broken it also implies that social anxiety is ‘a thing’ and not a process. This, in my opinion, is one of the most in-accurate and dangerous belief systems that you can buy into and unfortunately the one that most health care services in the western world create and re-enforce.
You are not broken…your brain is like a well oiled machine, a finely tuned instrument…It may be playing the wrong tune but it’s playing it damm well…
These patterns, in the form of internal pictures, movies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sounds,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], internal critical voices and feelings can often cause havoc to the quality of your life but at the end of the day it’s not a thing but rather just your own going experience heading in an un-useful direction.
Just knowing these two distinctions is such a powerful first step for those who feel unnecessarily anxious around people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The distinctions that:
This belief that social anxiety is simply a pattern that is learned, repeated and re-enforced over time is for me the crucial distinction that someone who is trained (and experienced) in NLP makes in comparison to someone who is not. From the initial diagnosis by a GP to the numerous sessions with a psychiatrist the language that is almost always used creates and re-enforces the in accurate and dangerous assumption in the patients mind that ‘they have got something’,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like a cold or some sort of illness or virus.
With my own background being in NLP (Neuro linguistic programming),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], change psychology and hypnosis I am hugely biased towards the belief that feeling unnecessarily anxious or phobic around people is a neurological pattern that is learned and re-enforced through time and, as such,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], can also be un-learned through time. I’m not making the bold claim that everyone who experiences it can be cured almost instantly with a few techniques. While most have their similarities each case is obviously unique and it can often take a bit of exploration to find what works with each particular person.
When you really get down to it, it is a group of limiting beliefs/mis-informed opinions that you have created (usually with good intentions and out with conscious awareness) about your relationship with people that have left you with a hugely un-helpful pattern or patterns that you play through way too often.
