"We've been seeing over 2,000 tourists a day lately because dragons have a very special place in Chinese culture," said a local tourism official, referring to the period from Apr. 27 to May 5, China's Labor Day holiday.
The island usually welcomes 1,000 Chinese a day, but more than three times as many turned up over the holiday.
Nearby, Bao Jian street, named after a large Chinese industrial group that sent its 12,000 employees to the island in 2011 as part of a reward program, is lined with seafood restaurants. Now regular direct flights connect nine Chinese cities to Jeju, up from six last year. Charter flights also link the island to 24 Chinese cities, more than double 11 last year.

He says he worked in Qatar and in Kuwait for six years and is a carpenter in Abu Dhabi.
◆ 1,300 N.Korean Laborers in UAE
Around 30,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 foreign laborers live in the camps on Reem Island. They come from all over the world, including Pakistan, Bangladesh and China. The North Korean laborers live in a part of the camp 400 m from the entrance. "Money was pretty good about three to four years ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but now it's tough to find work," said one North Korean worker.
Around 1,300 North Koreans work in Abu Dhabi and Dubai,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according to sources. Altogether around 6,000 North Koreans work in the Middle East, 3,100 of them in Kuwait. Some 800 work in the UAE and Qatar, with another 300 in Oman and 250 in Yemen. North Korea has been sending workers to construction sites in the Middle East so they can earn hard currency to send back to their impoverished country.
The movement resembles the exodus of South Koreans who came to the Middle East in the 1970s and '80s to work at construction sites,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the main difference is that the North Korean government takes away the money its workers earn there. When asked about their wages,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one North Korean worker said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "A lot of us have many years of experience working overseas as carpenters or welders and make between $150 and $200 a month,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is about the same as the Pakistanis make." The level of discontent recently prompted the North Korean government to dispatch security agents who trawl construction sites on weekends to provide ideological "cleansing" sessions to workers.

◆ Bootlegging and Illegal Employment
Since the construction industry in the Middle East fell into a slump due to the global financial crisis, North Korean workers have been resorting to other means to make money. The most common method is bootlegging in Abu Dhabi,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where alcohol is banned. But that is a criminal offense that carries to two to three months in prison and deportation. "The North Korean companies that sent the workers abroad are aware of the bootlegging but are turning a blind eye as long as the laborers pay portions of the profits,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," one local source said.
Some North Koreans leave the construction sites and work as handymen or build fountains for private homes. Three employees of Daewoo Engineering and Construction were kidnapped Thursday at a construction site in Nigeria. The abduction came four months since nine workers of the same firm were taken hostage in the African country and released 60 hours later,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and 11 months since yet another group was kidnapped there last June.

Scores of armed militias that specialize in kidnappings for ransom reportedly roam the lawless Niger Delta,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where the abductions took place. There are some 250 expatriates who work for Korean corporations such as Daewoo Engineering and Construction and Hyundai Heavy Industries building power stations and oil pipelines in Nigeria.
If kidnappings happen in such a region,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's common sense for governments and construction firms to resume projects only once proper protection for workers is in place. But except for a warning against Koreans touring the Niger Delta in the wake of the last kidnapping,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there are no signs that the government has done anything to ensure the safety of our workers. A National Intelligence Service directive on April 17 urging Koreans to refrain from touring the delta region and telling Korean residents in Nigeria to stay indoors until mid-May for reasons of political instability is about all the government has come up with. "Armed insurgents infiltrated from the sea in the past to kidnap workers. We are checking if the latest kidnappings were perpetrated by a group of insurgents that infiltrated overland,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," a Foreign Ministry official said.
Daewoo reportedly has 140 Korean employees working at eight project sites in Nigeria including the one where the latest kidnapping took place. The company sounded surprised at the latest incident.
